By the end of this course you will: understand how to use oil paints. Be able to undertake a painting alone. Have proficiency in colour mixing, and have a good understanding of colour theory. Have an understanding of tone, composition, handling paint, and more and importantly by week four feel confident to continue the work alone at home! Finally you will also have a number of paintings to take away with you.

Course Content

Week one: Tone and composition
Tone. Working with a limited tonal palette, you will practice handling oil paint. Using a still life set up in the studio you will learn how to draw out the form and develop a basic tonal underpainting.
Week two: Colouring from the masters
We will start to understand how to handle colour and basic colour theory. Looking at master paintings we will start to work from existing paintings. Looking at colour mixing in practice, students will make a copy of a painting by another artist.
Week three: The still life
Working from a still life set up in the studio we will start to explore abstraction. Working from an elaborate textural still life, we will be using viewfinders to section areas of interest and have timed studies. We will look at contemporary artists for inspiration.
Week four: Abstract Composition
Bring your own resources this week preferably a selection of images you find inspiring or that you hold resonance with. This could be magazine cuttings or something you found online. Using all the accumulated skills students will develop their own painting from a photo. The aim will be to create an abstract painting that is born from the key elements of what inspires you about your chosen images.
