Life model and basic materials included
Structured drawing course comprising of 6 monday evening classes. The classes will be led by Louise Thomas. Over the six weeks you will learn and develop new skills in drawing. The course will cover many areas of art practice and draughtsmanship including charcoal reduction, measuring, tonal values, composition and building narratives in your work. At the end of the course you will have a comprehensive selection of drawings to add to your portfolio with a broad range of studies and art works. The course will instill confidence in the student and cultivate each students unique style of working.
: Measuring, space and value
Learn how to accurately measure you model and plan out your composition. Using fractions and positive and negative space to build a composition.
WEEK TWO light and tone
Consider carefully your light source and work out where the shadows are falling, create areas of contrast and areas of lightness.
WEEK THREE: Charcoal reduction
Charcoal reduction is a technique used to create form and value. Using charcoal first and then removing it to create value and your composition.
WEEK FOUR : Structure and shading
Using charcoal we will explore methods of shading and how to create structure and physical form in the body.
WEEK FIVE : Atmosphere and narrative
Using the skills learnt in the previous lessons students will now develop a scenario or story for their composition. Thinking about emotions and developing a narrative within the artwork.
WEEK SIX : Head and shoulders portrait lesson
With an introduction to portraiture, measuring and drawing the head and shoulders. The final class will use all previous skills learnt and focus on building a head and shoulders portrait.
About the tutor
Louise Thomas is a visiting tutor at Falmouth University since 2010 and leads a course programme in painting and drawing at the Newlyn school of art in Cornwall since 2015. London-born Louise Thomas, currently living and working in Berlin, received her BA in Fine Art from the Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall in 2007, following a Diploma in Art Foundation from Kingston University, London in 2004. In addition to participating in Art Brussels with BISCHOFF/WEISS in 2009 and receiving the 2007 Ferdynand Zweig Scholarship, Thomas has exhibited internationally and shows works regularly in London and Berlin. Shortlisted for the Celeste Painting Prize and 4 New Sensations, organised by the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4, both in 2007. Recent solo exhibitions include The discovery room Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, Berlin 2019, GTA Tru Life at Other Projects, Berlin and Artifice of Paradise at BISCHOFF/WEISS, London (both 2013), Thomas has been a Artist Speaker at both The Royal Academy and Serpentine Gallery, London.
What is included
Course fees include the cost of the life model, charcoal, paper and fixative. Students are encouraged to bring their own materials to experiment with, a portfolio to keep work safe, an A2/3 toned sketchbook, a set of minimum 3 pencils and fixative to preserve the work and putty rubber. A bottle of water is advised while working on drawings.

The class is limited to 8 places so booking in advance is essential. If for any reason you are unable to attend a full refund is available 10 days before the start of the course. If possible we can place you on a future course.
