Der Essay-Film zusammenfasst Dominique Hurths langjährige Recherchen zur Uniform der KZ-Aufseherin des Frauen-Konzentrationslagers Ravensbrück und verwebt mehrere Jahre Archivarbeit in den Gedenkstätten Ravensbrück und Dachau, Besuche und Forschungsaufenthalte im Bundesarchiv, in den Sammlung des Militärhistorischen Museums Dresden, Theaterdepots, internationalen Modenarchiven und in den Militärmuseen in Paris und London. Der Filmtitel stammt aus einer Anordnung des Lagerkommandanten Max Koegel für die Aufseherinnen von 1942, die deutlich macht, wie die Uniform eine Person der ihr zugeschriebenen Rolle identifiziert oder wie man die Uniform als Frau zu tragen hat.

The essay film summarizes Dominique Hurth’s long-standing research on the uniform of the female guard at the Ravensbrück Women’s Concentration Camp and weaves together several year research at the Ravensbrück and Dachau memorial sites, the German Federal Archives, the collections of the Military History Museum in Dresden, theatre costume depots, international fashion archives, and military museums in Paris and London. The film’s title comes from an order issued in 1942 by the camp commandant, Max Koegel, outlining instructions for the female guards on the proper way to wear the uniforms as women – and underscoring how the uniform serves to identify a person with the role assigned to them.
